Perhaps the most notorious franchise in NFL history, the Oakland Raiders (a.k.a, The Men in Black) were established in 1960 as one of the founding teams of the AFL. Under head coach and general manager Al Davis, the Raiders won the 1967 AFL championship and advanced to their first Super Bowl, which they lost to the Green Bay Packers.
In 1969 the legendary John Madden became head coach, and under his leadership the Raiders became an elite team and developed a reputation as a fierce squad that liked to hit hard. Oakland Raiders Ticket Holders of this era saw NFL greats with colorful nicknames such as Gene “Highway 63” Upshaw, Skip “Dr. Death” Thomas, Jack “The Assassin” Tatum, Ken “The Snake” Stabler, and Daryle “The Mad Bomber” Lamonica.
The Oakland Raiders won their first Super Bowl in 1977. Madden’s successor, Tom Flores, guided the team to another Super Bowl victory in 1981. Their third and (so far) final Super Bowl victory came in 1984, when the franchise had already relocated to Los Angeles. In 1989, former Raiders offensive tackle Art Shell, was named head coach of the team, becoming the first African-American head coach in modern NFL history.
Oakland Raiders Ticket Holders were ecstatic when the team returned to Oakland in 1995. The excitement gave rise to the official name of Raiders fans, “Raider Nation.” The Raiders struggled in the years after their second move, but they advanced to the Super Bowl in 2003 behind quarterback Rich Gannon and wide receivers Tim Brown and Jerry Rice.
The Oakland Raiders have played some of the greatest games in NFL history at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Score your tickets to see this legendary team in action from Golden Tickets.
